Elevator Malfunction

In the event that an elevator stops with passengers in it, remember to remain calm.

The following is a summary of what happens if an entrapment call is placed via the elevator emergency phone:

  • Trapped passenger contacts Otisline via elevator emergency phone
  • Otisline rep confirms the passenger is trapped
  • Otisline reps go through a 3-step process with the entrapped passenger: 1) Check the emergency stop switch to ensure it is in the “RUN” position; 2) Have the passenger push the “Door Open” button to see if the doors will open; and 3) Check the car doors to make sure they are closed all the way. The passenger may have to put his/her hands on the doors’ surface and, without exertion, manually push them together. The passenger should not place their hands, fingers, or any part of their body between the doors. They should not try to force open the doors and climb out at any time.
  • If steps A-C do not release the trapped passenger, the passenger will be advised to stay in the elevator until a trained, licensed mechanic arrives.
  • Under no circumstances should the passenger self-evacuate.

Once the Otisline rep goes through the A-C steps with the passenger, they will let the passenger know a mechanic will be dispatched to assist.

In the event of a power outage, elevators will continue to operate using our emergency power generator. Should an outage occur, elevator lights will remain on, but the car itself will temporarily cease moving. Each elevator will automatically return to the lobby, their doors will open and they will remain inoperable until the power has been restored.

IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE, ELEVATORS MUST NOT BE USED FOR EVACUATION. USE THE STAIRWELLS.
