Evacuation

EXIT STAIRWAYS

There are two (2) exit stairways which are to be used for evacuation for floors 6 through 22 and three (3) exit stairwells for the basement through the 5th floor. Occupants are to use one or any of these stairways as may be determined by the company fire warden, Building Management personnel or Fire Department personnel.

FIRE STAIRWELL FANS

Located in the fire stairwells are fans that will automatically start upon a fire emergency and will maintain a positive pressure in the stairwells. This will keep smoke from entering the stairwells.

EVACUATION LEADER (TENANT):

Each Tenant should appoint an Evacuation Leader. This should be a person who is usually available at his or her work station during normal periods of occupancy. The person selected must be emotionally stable and one who is willing to accept the responsibility. Each evacuation leader should have a designated alternate to perform the required duties in his/her absence. For multi-floor tenants, an evacuation leader will report to the designated floor warden.

The Evacuation Leader should be responsible for informing all company employees, guests, and visitors of the following:

  • Location of fire alarm pulls boxes and how they are used.
  • Location of exit stairways.
  • Location of fire extinguisher cabinet(s) within Tenant premises and in the corridor and how they are used.
  • He/She should instruct employees that in the event of a fire, not to panic and not to use the elevators.
  • All employees should know calling "911" to report a fire and if possible, to call Building Security.
  • Location of Fire Warden's telephone in the stairwell landing.

MONITORS:

Each Tenant's Evacuation Leader should appoint sufficient monitors to assure that the Emergency Plan will be carried out.

Monitors should perform their function in the evacuation plan under the direction and supervision of the company's Evacuation Leader or Building Management personnel.

Evacuation Leader(s) and monitor(s) should work closely together to ensure that a method of notification is set up within each company's organization to ensure notification of each regular occupant and the visiting public of any necessary evacuation of the Building or Floor.

PERSONS NEEDING ASSISTANCE:

Each Evacuation Leader should assign a person to, or assume personal responsibility for, assisting each wheelchair or otherwise non-ambulatory person in his/her work area.

The Evacuation Leader should compile and keep a current list of such special needs persons available at his/her workstation, whether temporary or long-term.

Each tenant shall submit a Special Needs List (opens in new window)of such persons to the Building Management Office along with a Responsibilities Reference Chart for Fire Drill & Evacuation Form (opens in new window) and see that changes in the list are communicated immediately to the managers' office upon such charge.

COMPANY EMERGENCY PLAN:

Each Tenant should prepare an internal fire emergency evacuation plan for their employees and their space.

This plan should cover the possibility of one or more of the exit doors being inaccessible.

A visual floor plan should be posted in a common area for frequent review by employees. Please be reminded that familiarity with the Plan is the key to effectiveness in the event of an emergency.

IF AN ALARM SOUNDS ON YOUR FLOOR

  1. In the event of an alarm, all tenants shall evacuate the building. Become familiar with the sound of the fire alarm. You will hear a wailing tone, then a message via the emergency broadcast instructing everyone to evacuate the building.
  2. The emergency response team will assemble and assume their positions at their posts.
  3. Floor Wardens and Evacuation Leaders will immediately begin their responsibilities.
  4. All evacuees MUST use the stairwells.
    • Walk, DO NOT RUN.
    • DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS.
    • Stay to the right and hold the railing (The fire department may be using the stairwells to go to the impacted area).
    • If a stairwell becomes unusable, leave at nearest exit and proceed to an alternate stairwell.
    • Only proceed to a higher floor or the roof if instructed to do so through the emergency broadcast system.
  5. After exiting stairwells at the ground floor lobby, proceed to the safe meeting place (please see attached ground floor diagram (opens in new window)):
    • Across Richard Street at the Iolani Palace grounds.
    • Floor Wardens will Hold up Floor number signs, gather by floors (please see Safe Site Diagram (opens in new window)).
    • Evacuation Leaders will submit their attendance rolls to Floor Wardens.
    • Floor Wardens will submit their roles to the Situation Leader (Security Supervisor).
  6. Stay put, until someone from the emergency response team gives the “All Clear” that it is safe to re-enter the building.
  7. Upon an “All Clear” the Building Engineer will instruct and direct all evacuees in an organized fashion, back into the building by floor.
